Blog Entry 190: Pine Ridge Co-op petition tabled in House of Commons

The folks at Pine Ridge Co-op in Burnaby have been big backers of the You Hold the Key Campaign since the beginning. So has Burnaby South MP Kennedy Stewart. And the two of them teamed up on Thursday to place the issue of expiring rent subsidies for low-income co-op members before Parliament once again. Stewart presented a petition on behalf of Pine Ridge Co-op in the House of Commons calling on the government to preserve rent subsidies for the seniors, people with disabilities, single parents and other who need support to keep their homes affordable.

Blog Entry 189: Liberals repeat pledge to fix co-op housing crunch during Throne Speech debate

Caught in the co-op housing crunch? Are your ears burning? ‘Cos they were talking about you on Tuesday in the House of Commons during the debate on the Speech from the Throne. Several newly-elected MPs used their first speeches in the house to remind the Liberal government about their pledge to continue rent support for low-income and other co-op members. And in response to one such question by NDP MP Marjolaine Boutin-Sweet (Hochelaga), Liberal MP Bernadette Jordan (South Shore-St. Margarets, pictured below) reiterated that the new government will keep its word:

Blog Entry 188: Totem resolution underlines YHTK Campaign’s family ties

One definition of the word totem is “an emblem of a group of people, such as a family.” The word comes from the Ojibway for “that from which I draw my purpose, meaning, and being.” So it’s doubly-fitting that Totem Housing Co-op in Surrey brings the number of co-ops that have passed a resolution supporting the You Hold the Key Campaign to 116. Totem’s 58 households have added their voice to our campaign to get a federally-funded, provincially-delivered rent supplement program for our low-income members.

Victoria is known as the “Garden City” and one of its claims to fame are its 1,600 hanging flower baskets. Blog Entry 184: Key campaign break 7,000 barrier

Barriers are made to be broken. Chuck Yeager broke the sound barrier in 1947. Agnes Macphail broke the gender barrier in 1921 when she became the first woman elected to the House of Commons. And this week, the You Hold the Key Campaign broke the 7,000 households barrier with Whattlekainum Co-op in Burnaby passing a resolution supporting the campaign. That makes 115 co-ops representing 7,014 households that have shown their resolve to fix the co-op housing crunch.

The Key Campaign’s Show Some Resolve! Drive hit the 114 mark and is nearing a slam-dunk moment. Saanich Councillor Fred Haynes (first from the left in the picture) has worked tirelessly to preserve, protect and enhance affordable housing in his community and the Capital Regional District. Amongst other things, he and CHF BC President Patty Shaw co-organized a meeting during the federal election that put candidates, co-op members and other voters in the same room to discuss these issues and the future of co-op housing. So it’s nice to see Fred get acknowledged for all his hard work.
