Blog entry 83: 330 reasons for going to the Delta-Surrey-Langley Co-ops meeting Sept. 23

ONE: There are at least 330 good reasons for you to go to the You Hold the Key Campaign meeting for co-ops in Delta, Surrey and Langley

That’s the number of your fellow co-op members on subsidy who need help to keep their housing affordable. Who are they? They’re seniors, people with disabilities and with low incomes -- single parents and new Canadians. And if you don’t show up at Birch Co-op next Tuesday and send a clear signal that you care what happens to them when their rent support ends, well, why should the provincial government care?

We have 19 federally-operated housing co-ops from the mouth of the Fraser to Langley comprising over 1,000 households. Let’s pack the house and show our most vulnerable members we are prepared to go to bat for them.

TWO: A big shout-out to Alder Bay Co-op for passing a resolution to support the You Hold the Key Campaign. Not only did they pass the motion calling on the Province to fund a rent supplement program to replace expiring federal subsidies for low-income members in housing co-ops, they sent it to Vancouver Mayor Gregor Robertson, Honourable Candice Bergen, Federal Minister of State for Social Development and Honourable Hedy Fry MP Vancouver Centre (and us, of course). See which other co-ops have shown resolve in backing the campaign (link to resolutions page)
