Blog 92: Union of BC Municipalities holds the Key!

(WHISTLER) It’s official: the Union of BC Municipalities holds the Key! At the UBCM convention in Whistler the delegates unanimously endorsed the resolution put forward by Metro Vancouver calling on the provincial government to fix the co-op housing crunch.

Vancouver Councillor (and Metro Vancouver Vice-chair) Raymond Louie was delighted by the vote. “I’m very pleased,” he said. “And hopeful the government will listen.” So was Langley Township Councillor (and Metro Vancouver Housing Committee member) Steve Ferguson. “I’m a big supporter of co-op housing,” said Ferguson. The resolution (B44) calls on the provincial and federal governments to fund a rent supplement program for low-income co-op members. Here’s the motion:

THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED that local governments throughout British Columbia urge the federal and provincial governments to work together to reduce the uncertainty for vulnerable members of housing cooperatives by ensuring that long-term, costshared rental assistance programs are in place as federal cooperative housing agreements expire.

Now the Key campaign has the backing of every civic government in the province. Way to go, UBCM! You hold the key!
