What makes a good board?
The board is responsible for managing the business of the co-op. It sounds simple, but a co-op's success or failure as a business and as a community depends on it. A good board understands:
- what it needs to achieve to be successful
- its legal obligations
- its role - and the role of members, staff, and committees - in governing and managing the co-op
- how the governing documents guide co-op decision-making and actions
- the most common mistakes and how to avoid them
- what it will take to become a 2020 Co-op with a sustainable future.
We'll show you some tools that will help you plan for effective board meetings based on an annual calendar. And when your board takes a workshop like this annually, you meet one of the requirements for the 2020 standard "Good governance and principled leadership".
This three-hour workshop can be combined with What makes a good director? for a full-day Board of directors workshop, or parts can be brought to you as a mini-workshop of 1.5 hours.
