End of HST: What co-ops should know AND Education Conference early bird deadline extended! - March 22, 2013

Goodbye HST, hello GST and PST: what does this mean for your co-op?

On April 1, the Harmonized Sales Tax (HST) of 12% will be replaced by the 5% Goods and Services Tax (GST) and 7% Provincial Sales Tax (PST), where applicable.  In general this is good news for co-ops because even though there is no PST rebate, your co-op will not need to pay PST on most services.

Early bird deadline extended!

Workshops are filling fast, but there's still time to register for the Spring Education Conference on April 6. And we've extended the early bird deadline to Monday, March 25 at 5 p.m.

Just a couple of the great workshops you don't want to miss are Conflict in co-ops: just deal with it! (full-day workshop) and Asset management - it's easy as 1, 2, 3! (afternoon). Get information about all the workshops in the conference flyer and click on the workshop titles to learn more including names of workshop leaders.

The federal budget renews commitment to affordable housing

In the federal budget announced March 21, we learned that the government has renewed its commitment to the Affordable Housing Initiative ($1.25 billion) and the Homelessness Partnering Strategy ($600 million). In its press release, CHF Canada spoke in support of this commitment and other positive housing initiatives but also called for all levels of government to find a solution to prevent the loss of subsidies for nearly 200,000 co-op and non profit homes across the country as federal operating agreements come to an end.

CHF BC is working to make sure  all candidates and parties in the upcoming provincial election hear this message too. Stay tuned for more information on how you can make sure your co-op's voice is heard.
