Fire at Victoria co-op

An early-morning fire at Pioneer Co-op in Victoria on April 20 destroyed one unit and caused smoke damage to two other units. Fortunately, no one was hurt and all the families had insurance. The family who lost their home has been able to find temporary accommodation and the co-op is able to offer them another unit in July.

The co-op is undergoing a major envelope repair and the scaffolding in place helped firefighters gain access to control the blaze.

For anyone who wants to help, there is a GoFundMe account accepting donations for the family. For co-ops who'd like to donate household items, please get in touch with us at members@chf.bc.ca and we can put you in touch with the co-op.

Federal Finance Minister visits Toronto co-op, underlines government's commitment to co-ops across the country

CHF BC is pleased to pass on some great news from Ontario today. Minister of Finance Bill Morneau visited Hugh Garner Housing Co-op in Toronto and confirmed the federal government's budget commitment of $30 million over the next two years to ensure that housing co-ops whose federal agreements are ending can continue to provide subsidies to their low-income households.

Morneau said, “I know uncertainty has been hard for co-ops, especially those whose long-term operating agreements have ended, and I want you to know the government stands with you and will be a reliable partner.” He went on to say, "to Hugh Garner, to co-ops across Toronto and across the country: your government cares and will work with you to ensure your communities are even stronger.”
