Metro Vancouver throws support behind campaign

The campaign received a key endorsement March 28 when the Metro Vancouver Board voted to urge the provincial and federal governments to protect low-income co-op members at risk of losing their homes. Directors unanimously passed a motion calling on the B.C. government to put a provincial rent supplement program in place for low-income co-op members as federal housing agreements end.

The motion also encourages local governments throughout B.C. to call on the federal and provincial governments to work together to reduce the uncertainty for vulnerable housing co-op members by ensuring long-term, cost-shared rental assistance programs are in place as federal co-op housing agreements expire. You can find the text of the Metro motion here (URL).Co-op communities can follow Metro’s lead and pass a model resolution supporting the

Packed Burnaby co-op meeting kick-starts campaign public events

A packed audience raised the roof and set off a media feeding frenzy at CHF BC’s first public meeting on the housing crunch. An overflow crowd of nearly 70 people representing 11 Burnaby co-op communities met at Halston Hills Co-op in Burnaby on March 20. CHF BC Executive Director Thom Armstrong facilitated the gathering, which featured a lively Q&A session and generated lots of ideas from members on how to get action out of the provincial government.

The meeting generated a flurry of media coverage, with very positive stories appearing in print and on radio and television. The Burnaby Co-ops meeting is the first of what CHF BC hopes will be a series of similar rallies across the province. Do you want a campaign public meeting in your ‘hood? Tell us about it!
