A year of highlights

We end 2017 with a record membership of 252 co-ops with 13,499 homes. And as we look back at a year of highlights, we look forward to an even more exciting year ahead.

In 2017 we welcomed a co-op-friendly provincial budget, a National Housing Strategy and Vancouver's Housing Strategy. With all levels of government committing to long-term investments in affordable housing, co-ops can finally look forward to permanent help for low-income members and the development of more new co-op homes.

CHF BC celebrated its 35th anniversary and continued to provide value-added programs and services for its members in 2017. We kicked off our Century of Co-operation Awards, recognizing a total of 113 members whose age plus years of living in a housing co-op equaled 100 or more. We'll continue this new tradition in the coming years to recognize our co-op elders. And our Scholarship Fund continued to provide scholarships to students living in housing co-ops. We took a look at our scholarship legacy in our summer issue of Scoop magazine.

See more of our program highlights below and be sure to join us in 2018 as we bring more good news and opportunities for housing co-ops and their members.

Happy holidays!

Your new board line-up

As you learned in our recent news piece, we welcomed two new and three returning directors to the CHF BC board at our AGM on November 19. Here they are, ready to tackle the challenge of building a thriving co-op housing future.

Your board:

Front and centre: Charles Sandor (Salal). Behind Charles from left to right: Sahara Shaik (Wits End); Island Director Art Farquharson (Seawalk); President Cassia Kantrow (Pace Accounting); Yuri Artibise (Athletes Village); Bob Lewis (Marina); Member-at-Large Eddie Sabile (Killarney Gardens); Secretary Thomas Robson (Lore Krill); Catherine Frost (Arbutus); Vice-President Erin Gilchrist (Heritage); Treasurer Larisa Gorodetsky (Granville Gardens); and Island Director David Maier (Greenway).

Planning and Renewal Program highlights

CHF BC's Planning and Renewal Program was very busy in 2017 helping more co-ops obtain engineering reports, create long-term asset management plans, and secure financing for major capital projects.

We’ve also assisted co-ops in developing strategies for lease renewals and considering options around redevelopment and repair.

2017 saw the successful completion of renewal projects including those of Domego Co-op in Vancouver (at left) and Pioneer Co-op in Victoria, with more to come in 2018.

Group Buying Program highlights

Our Group Buying Program continued to help member co-ops with big savings on appliances, banking, cabinets and countertops, flooring, maintenance supplies and waste and recycling. And more than 2,200 co-op homes in 114 co-ops have cut their HDTV, internet and home phone services in half through our Telecom Program with TELUS.

Education Program highlights

CHF BC's Education Program continued to expand its workshop offerings – portable, scheduled and webinars. We held education conferences in the Lower Mainland at a bright new venue, and provided education at events on the Island and in the Interior.

Call for workshop proposals: And if you have an idea for a workshop for our spring education conference, you are welcome to submit it now (until January 31) for consideration. Please send your proposal to Sophie Cooper at scooper@chf.bc.ca.
