Spring Education Conference offers plenary session

After you told us how much you liked the first-ever plenary session at the fall education conference, we're planning to anchor our Spring Education Conference on April 1 with a plenary called "Doing Things Differently." All participants will take part in this session to consider what co-ops can do — and are already doing — to tackle common challenges with fresh solutions.

One thing co-ops can do differently to ensure a vibrant future is involve co-op youth in governance and community-building. Join us for an afternoon workshop, The Under 25s, where we will hear from young people who are making a difference in their co-ops, just like the young leaders from the early days of housing co-ops in Canada. Together we will explore ways co-ops can engage youth to re-energize their leadership and their communities.

Help "make housing central" in the upcoming provincial election

Join us next Monday, March 20 at our Member Forum for CHF BC and CHF Canada members. With a provincial election looming in May we'll be talking about the issues and sharing strategies to make sure we let all parties and candidates know how important it is to "make housing central".

Diana Dilworth, Manager of Government Relations for Housing Central (representing both CHF BC and the BC Non-Profit Housing Association) will be there to walk us through our “make housing central” campaign plan. And from Ottawa, Tim Ross, CHF Canada’s Director, Strategic Affairs will share all the rumours from Parliament Hill on what to expect in the March 22 federal budget and our national strategy to support co-op housing.

Sign-up online for this free event. We look forward to seeing you there!

Co-op  Housing Interest Pool (CHIP) program gives higher return on co-op dollars

Does your co-op use our popular CHIP Program?  More than 150 housing co-ops are glad they do.

In CHIP, your co-op will earn higher interest on its current accounts. CHIP turns several small co-op accounts into one large depositor, making everyone eligible for better interest rates. The larger the total amount on deposit, the higher the returns. Currently there is over $70 million on deposit in CHIP through three participating credit unions.

On the Mainland, CHIP is offered at all branches of Vancity, and at CCEC Credit UnionOn Vancouver Island, CHIP is available at Coast Capital Savings and Vancity.

CHF BC member a winner in the "Discover Energy Savings Challenge"

Remember this? Our Housing Central partner, BC Non-Profit Housing Association, held a Discover Energy Savings Challenge this winter and all non-profit housing providers and co-ops were eligible to participate. The entry deadline was February 28, 2017. Co-ops and non-profits just needed to identify one planned energy saving activity at their co-op to be eligible to win one of two $500 draw prizes.

Gabe Dennis of Access Housing Co-op in East Vancouver won a $500 gift card of his choice for his winning entry to the contest. Here's part of Gabe's submission that describes his co-op's project:

"Access Housing Co-operative is currently undergoing a roofing and gutter/drains project and as a "green" conservation measure, we are planning to install rain barrels. This more efficient water conservation effort would decrease our use of drinking water from the city reservoir when we care for our fruit trees, vegetable & pollinator gardens."

Congratulations Gabe!
