We’re 30 years old!

CHF BC was born 30 years ago from the efforts of housing co-ops who wanted to extend the principle of co-operation among co-operatives to build a stronger co-op housing movement in British Columbia.

In 1982, about 80 delegates from local housing co-ops met at False Creek Housing Co-op and, using a consensus approach, approved the rules and memorandum to create a regional federation of housing co-ops in British Columbia. This was the birth of the Co-operative Housing Federation of BC. The federation was incorporated on July 27, 1982.

Today we represent and serve almost 240 housing co-ops with almost 13,000 co-op homes. We are proud of our reputation as a dynamic, member-focused association with a mission to promote the long-term sustainability of housing co-ops and the co-op housing sector.

Together with our members we’ve come through challenges of leaky co-ops and government claw-backs, developed the Model Rules, and we now stand ready to support co-ops as they transition to life outside government operating agreements.

We’ve celebrated our 30th anniversary with a new logo and shared a birthday cake at the Co-op Housing Summer BBQ.  As our 30th coincides with the International Year of Co-operatives, we continue to celebrate 2012 with banners, a Co-op-of-the-Month featured story on our website, and our members are forming co-op clusters in their community in honour of this international year.  Watch for more celebrations to come.

Happy Birthday CHF BC!
