May 19 Vancouver Island Council meeting elects new executive

The May 19 Vancouver Island Council meeting was well attended. Several directors took part, including Vancouver Island directors Susan Barron and Mary McMullan. CHF BC’s vice president Dianne Brubaker and President Catherine Porter attended from Vancouver, along with Yaana Dancer, CHF Canada’s regional director. There was a great deal of useful information provided at the meeting, but the biggest event of the night was the election of new chair and vice-chair.

Mitch Mackin was elected to serve as the Vancouver Island Council’s new Chairperson for the next year. Larry LeSage will serve as Vice-Chair.

The report from the board, delivered jointly by Susan Barron and Mary McMullan, offered delegates information on the CHF BC Semi Annual General Meeting on May 1, 2010 in Vancouver with an emphasis on issues relevant to Vancouver Island members. The board report focused on the Federation’s education program, 2020 Vision and the 2020 Compass, information on the status of leaky co-ops in BC, and the budget for 2010-2011.

Executive Director Thom Armstrong led a member forum on the topic of economies of scale in the co-op housing sector. This caused an enthusiastic discussion among delegates and observers as they looked for ways that co-ops can work together to take advantage of their numbers and sustain themselves in the future.

The next Vancouver Island Council meeting will be held on October 13, 2010. Hope to see you there!
