Education
The Road to 2020
CHF BC provides education for housing co-op members and staff. Our goal is to
promote good management, sound governance and
principled leadership. We can also help
your co-op on the Road to 2020 Vision.
Our experienced workshop leaders
and consultants are trained in community-based
adult education. They use the most up to
date information to help co-ops be both viable
businesses and caring communities.
We have skilled chairs for board
or members meetings.
2020 Compass

Housing co-ops face several challenges after
mortgages are paid and subsidies end.
2020 Vision certification, developed by
CHF Canada and CHF BC, will help prepare
your co-op for success.
The
2020 Compass is your first step to 2020
certification. It is a facilitated
process to help your co-op achieve the first
2020 Vision standard: a mission statement
for the future based on shared values.
Your co-op will also develop
a vision statement that will help chart a
course for your future. A trained Compass facilitator will guide
your co-op through the process at a series
of members' meetings and board meetings.
Besides being a roadmap to
the future, the 2020 Compass brings other
benefits to your co-op. It will
improve morale, show how to make meetings
fun and productive, focus attention on the
things that really matter to your community
and help you choose between competing
priorities for the short and long term.
The 2020 Compass will point
you in the right direction as you take up
the challenge of meeting all eight standards
of a
2020 co-op.
Education Conferences and Events

Twice a year, spring and fall, CHF BC holds an education conference for co-op members and staff.
We offer many of the workshops in our list of workshops as well as other special workshops based
on current issues. The next Education Conference has not yet been scheduled. The workshops haven't been announced yet. Fees
Island Education Day

Twice a year, spring and fall, CHF BC holds an education day for Vancouver Island co-op members and staff. The next Island Education Day has not yet been scheduled. The workshops haven't been announced yet.
Workshops

Workshops and other education events are also offered throughout the year at CHF BCs offices at 200 - 5550 Fraser Street, Vancouver, and other locations.
Here's detailed information on currently scheduled workshops and how to register for them.
Workshop Subjects
We offer a large number of workshops in many different categories. For complete workshop descriptions click on the category that interests you:
Portable Workshops
We deliver portable customized workshops to your co-op when you need them. These workshops can be tailored to your situation. Workshops that can be delivered as portable workshops are indicated in the workshop subject lists. Contact Sue Moorhead to discuss your needs. Portable workshop fees
Conflict Resolution

CHF BC can help your co-op deal with
conflict effectively. A skilled facilitator can
help your co-op work through issues that are
causing conflict. We can provide advice to the
board about handling conflict. We have a pool of
experienced mediators who know about housing
co-ops.
Mediators do not make judgements about the people involved in a dispute but work with them to reach a mutually agreeable solution.
CHF BC does not provide mediators for
disputes between individuals. We do not provide
arbitrators. We can direct you where to
look for these services.

Advice
and Meeting Support

When your co-op is experiencing a problem, a consultant can help you with needed technical advice, information or skills
on any of the topics covered in our
workshops.
We can also provide meeting facilitation, chairing,
and problem solving. Before meeting with your group, the consultant will be in touch with a representative to learn about your issues. The minimum length of a consultation is three hours.

during office hours (8:30am to

The
Co-op Act

CHF BC has the information housing co-ops need to
know about the provincial
Cooperative Association Act, which came into force
in 2001.
The
Guide
to the Co-op Act will help you
understand and comply with the Act. Almost
all housing co-ops in BC have already used the
Model Rules and Occupancy Agreement to bring their Rules up to date. We offer
workshops and can provide advice on
the Act and the Rules for housing co-ops.
