More about our co-op:

What is a housing co-operative and how does it work?

Co-op housing is member controlled housing. The members who live in a co-op are the ones responsible for running the co-op. Each member has a vote and every year members elect a Board of Directors. Each family is expected to participate in the on-going care and maintenance of the co-op. It is very important that the prospective member understand the need for involvement in our community and above all, hold a positive attitude toward living in a diverse community.

What are the steps to becoming a member?

  1. Download and complete the application form. Return this information, plus a cover letter telling us about yourself (and your family) to WL Co-op at the following address:

          #1 - 13 K de K Court,
         New Westminster, BC,
         V3M 6B6

         Attention: Membership Committee

  1. When a unit becomes available, suitable candidates will be invited to attend an interview conducted by representatives of the Membership Committee. The interview will give us an opportunity to learn more about you and your family, as well to answer your questions. Applicants may be asked to bring letters of reference and recent financial information to the interview.

  2. Upon acceptance, we will verify your landlord reference as well as employment and credit histories. Our elected Board of Directors has the final responsibility of approving applications, based on the recommendations of the membership Committee. You will then be required to pay the share purchase, receive and sign the Occupancy Agreement and complete other forms required by the Co-op.

All personal information will be used in strict confidence to evaluate your application. Receipt of your application only places into the waiting list, it does not guarantee you will be selected or interviewed for membership during this period. The number of vacancies varies from year to year.

Please keep us informed in writing of any changes in address, income or unit preference (i.e. change in family size), it can affect your place in the waiting list and could result in you moving in more quickly.

Westminster Landing Co-op Fact Sheet

Members are required to participate by attending general meetings, by becoming active on one or more committees and taking their turn on the cleaning and maintenance rotation of the community areas (once every four weeks).

Since co-operative housing is an alternative to buying, not alternative to renting, members are expected to participate by contributing time and effort for the prosperity of our community of which we all take pride. We work collectively to maintain a well-managed housing co-operative and caring neighborhood. Desirable co-op members are those who accept the responsibilities of maintaining our environment while enjoying the benefits of living in an exceptional community.

At Westminster Landing each unit has:

  1. A refrigerator and a stove
  2. Wall-to-wall carpeting
  3. One bathroom and storage room
  4. Secure underground parking for one vehicle per unit

Common areas of the co-op include a community meeting room, laundry room (coin-operated with five washers and seven dryers), a children's play area in a safe private backyard, and visitors' parking.

We suggest that you review this information prior to an interview and for further information on co-operative housing see the rest of the www.chf.bc.ca site.
