Co-ops and the latest health order – December 2020

  8 December 2020

On December 7, the Provincial Health Officer updated their orders and extended these limitations until January 8.

CHF BC highly recommends that our members take the appropriate measures to ensure that their co-op communities stay safe and healthy. This means having a COVID-19 safety plan in place for your housing co-operative and regularly reviewing that plan with changes to the provincial health orders. Based on the November 20 provincial health order, we recommend adopting a policy for the mandatory use of masks in common areas.  At the time this advisory was issued to members, the wearing of masks in co-op common areas was not mandated by government, but CHF BC recommends that co-ops adopt measures to require it.

We also recommend that co-ops request a COVID-19 safety plan and policy from those individuals and trades who might be working at the co-operative.

Property management is considered an essential service and staff at COHO Management (CHF BC’s property management organization) continue to provide services to clients either from home or from the co-op if physical distancing and other safety measures can be in place.  All our staff working at co-ops are required to submit a daily response to COVID-19 screening questions to confirm that they are not displaying symptoms, have not been in contact with someone displaying symptoms and have not been required to self-isolate. We require our staff to wear masks in the common areas of co-ops at all times.

This can be a challenging time for everyone and for anyone finding it difficult we recommend that they check out all the resources available to support mental health.

CHF BC’s offices on Commercial Drive in Vancouver continue with a full shutdown, until further notice.

You can also find more guidance on issues related to the COVID-19 pandemic for your co-op on our COVID-19 resource pages.

Our staff continue to work to support you and your members via email and phone and online platforms to deliver what you need as we face these challenging circumstances together. If you have questions, please reach out to us via email at members@chf.bc.ca.

Please also note our winter closure dates beginning  December 19, 2020, and returning January 4, 2021.
