Kaslo Cooperative Action Network Info Session

Diana Day and Shari Laliberte      15 Dec 2021      online      Partner/affiliate event

Join co-op members to learn about Kaslo Gardens Housing Co-operative’s civic engagement committee: Kaslo Co-operative Action Network (Kaslo CAN) committee.

The Kaslo Co-operative Action Network (Kaslo CAN) committee was created within Kaslo Gardens Housing Co-operative to support Kaslo members to achieve their mission of promoting social and environmental justice within and beyond their housing co-op and to apply the 7th International Co-operative Alliance principle: concern for community.

In this information session, co-chairs Diana Day and Shari Laliberte, will share about the development of this civic engagement committee and the community building projects that the Kaslo CAN committee is working on:

  • The housing co-ops Truth and Reconciliation caucusing process;
  • Developing an e-cargo bike co-op in collaboration with Iva Jankovic from the BC Cooperative Association;
  • If funded, the Green Resilience Project will enable Kaslo CAN to engage the Kaslo neighourhood to explore/share their views on the links between a guaranteed livable income and moving to a net zero economy as part of national advocacy work by basic income and climate justice groups;
  • McCreary’s Youth Aging Out of Care proposal, which calls on housing co-ops to dedicate 5% of housing co-op units to young people who are transitioning from government care into young adulthood in our communities;
  • Developing a neighbourhood-based mutual aid hub to support community members facing challenges associated with inter-related crises: the climate crisis, COVID pandemic, opioid crises, growing economic inequities and increasing cost of living; and,
  • Building capacity within and beyond Kaslo in compassionate/non-violent communication and trauma informed community building work.

We hope to inspire other co-ops (all kinds of coops: worker, consumer, platform) to develop their own civic engagement committees and to work across our co-ops in making this a better world for our co-op members and wider community.

RSVP via Eventbrite. A Zoom link will be sent to registrants the day before.
