Spring 2022 Education Workshops

  1 March 2022

Our education team has lined up an exciting menu of online workshops this spring.

From a practical session on making sure your co-op is well maintained, to an important session on the legal duties of co-op directors, you’ll find our spring online education sessions interactive and informative.

MAY

May 19: Legal Duties of Directors
Most of us can recite the legal duties of co-op directors from memory. Who doesn’t know about fiduciary duty and the duty of care? But how do these important concepts translate into the daily demand for good governance and principled leadership in our co-ops?

May 26: Boards and Committees Working Together
Change is in the air with many co-ops taking a fresh look at board and committee roles to make sure they are delivering the best outcomes. Look at what practices have served us well in the past, what hasn’t worked as well as we’d hoped and what we want for the future.
JUNE

June 2: What Makes a Good Board?
The best workshop for a newly elected board: packed full with the basic knowledge all housing co-op directors need as well as tools for how to work effectively to ensure good governance, sound management and principled leadership.

June 9: Personal Information Protection Act (PIPA)
Co-ops can’t avoid dealing with a lot of personal information about members. That’s just the nature of our business. Find out how to protect your members’ right to privacy as required by the Personal Information Protection Act without compromising necessary co-op business practices.

June 16: Leadership that inspires member involvement
We all prefer activities we find rewarding — it’s human nature. It’s no different in housing co-ops. Communities have to earn their members’ involvement before they get it consistently. The good news is that we can do it.

June 23: Yikes, I’m the Secretary!
The secretary works with the board chair, other directors and management staff to fulfill co-op secretarial duties. This workshop will provide an overview of the main secretarial functions in the context of a housing co-op.

June 30: What Makes a Good Director?
Good directors make a good board. With a focus on the duty of care and the duty of loyalty this basic primer focuses on how each individual director ensures the board’s success.

Format: All workshops will continue to take place online via Zoom

Day and Time: Workshops take place weekday evenings from 6:00 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. PDT.
