Housing co-ops are known for providing homes in safe nurturing communities. But no community is completely immune to issues such as domestic violence. Walk through challenging scenarios that explore appropriate and safe community responses to women experiencing violence, and learn about local resources that can help.

What is the appropriate individual and community response when you suspect a woman in your community is experiencing violence? This workshop will offer a foundation in understanding violence against women and meaningful community responses, and the BC Society of Transition Houses (BCSTH) and YWCA will highlight local resources and will facilitate discussions to tackle scenarios that could impact a community. Recent research studies will also be presented to shed light on some of the trends we see in BC.

WORKSHOP FACILITATORS:

Tanyss Knowles is the Project Manager for the Getting Home Project at the BC Society of Transition Houses. She is also a registered social worker passionate about community-building and social policy that meets local needs and promotes community strengths. Louise Godard is the Director of Programs at the BC Society of Transition Houses. She has worked in the anti-violence sector for over 20 years in various capacities, including front-line crisis work, community-based research, policy development, and international work developing health policy for young girls trafficked and exploited in the sex trade. .
