It’s Time to Build The Next Generation of Co-op Housing

  28 March 2024

Speak up for more co-op housing!

Tell the federal government to launch the co-operative housing development program without delay.

Co-operative housing has been a community-driven housing solution for decades. Previous eras of government investment in the 1970s and 1980s helped build thousands of good quality co-op homes. These homes continue to offer affordability, stability, and community connection.

With the rising cost of living and a growing housing crisis, new co-op housing is needed now more than ever.

In 2022, the federal government committed $1 billion in loans and $500 million in grants for new co-op housing through the Co-operative Housing Development Program. This new program is the first dedicated federal investment in co-op housing in 30 years. The funding will help create thousands of new co-op homes.

To build new housing co-ops across the country, the program needs to start. That is why co-operative housing organizations are calling on the federal government to launch this new  program without delay.

Campaign Background

At our 2023 AGM last November, delegates passed an emergency resolution. It called on the federal government and the Minister of Housing, Infrastructure and Communities to launch the Co-op Housing Development Program without delay.

This campaign in support of the CHDP is an an initiative of our partners at the Co-operative Housing Federation of Canada—the national voice for housing co-operatives. We urge everybody—whether you live in a co-op or not—to support it.

Please send an email to your representatives in Ottawa using this link! The more voters that the Minister and other MPs hear from the harder it is to ignore this urgent call for action.
