Celebrating National Indigenous Peoples Day

  18 June 2025

June 21 is National Indigenous Peoples Day, a time to recognize and celebrate the diverse cultures, languages, and contributions of First Nations, Inuit, and Métis peoples across Canada.

The date was chosen to align with the summer solstice—an important time of renewal, ceremony, and gathering for many Indigenous communities. For co-ops and the broader housing community, this day is an opportunity to reflect, honour, and learn.

Honouring Culture and Community

Across British Columbia and Canada, Indigenous peoples continue to lead the way in cultural preservation, climate stewardship, governance, and community-building. As we celebrate, we are reminded of the depth, strength, and diversity of Indigenous cultures—each with distinct traditions, histories, and teachings that are vital to this land.

At CHF BC, we acknowledge that our offices and the homes of many of our members are located on unceded Indigenous territories. As we work toward reconciliation, we are committed to deepening our relationships with Indigenous housing providers, communities, and leaders.

Celebrating in Your Community

Many communities are hosting events, ceremonies, and performances to mark the day. Whether you’re in the Lower Mainland, on Vancouver Island, or in the Interior, there are ways to connect, celebrate, and support.

In Vancouver:

Join the City of Vancouver for a free community celebration at Trout Lake on June 21. Enjoy live music, storytelling, and traditional dance hosted in partnership with local Indigenous organizations.

Elsewhere in BC:

Look for local events hosted by Friendship Centres, libraries, museums, and Indigenous-led organizations. These gatherings often include opportunities to learn about Indigenous languages, art, and food, and to connect directly with community members.

What Co-ops Can Do

You don’t need to be at an event to recognize the day meaningfully. Here are a few ways co-op members and boards can participate:

Learn:
Take time to read about the unique histories and rights of First Nations, Inuit, and Métis peoples.
Start with the Truth and Reconciliation Commission’s Calls to Action or explore whose land your co-op is on through Native Land Digital.

Celebrate:
Share artwork, music, or stories by Indigenous creators in your co-op newsletters or social media.
Support Indigenous-owned businesses and creators in your community—like Authentic Indigenous Seafood, a local Indigenous and co-operatively owned seafood venture rooted in traditional knowledge and sustainability.

Acknowledge:
Start your next co-op meeting with a land acknowledgment. Make it meaningful—do the research to understand the local context and reflect on your co-op’s responsibilities.

A Shared Path Forward

National Indigenous Peoples Day is a celebration—but it’s also a call to action. We know that reconciliation requires more than awareness. It requires co-operation, partnership, and a long-term commitment to equity and justice.

As a co-operative federation, CHF BC is committed to ongoing learning, relationship-building, and advocacy that uplifts Indigenous voices and prioritizes inclusive, culturally safe housing solutions.

We encourage all our members to join us—not just on June 21, but every day—in honouring Indigenous peoples and working toward a more just future.
