Volunteering on (Non-Profit) Boards: Why and How to Join a Board workshop is designed specifically to help people from equity seeking groups, such as people with disabilities, people from Black and Indigenous communities and People of Colour, and newcomers to Canada to build skills, knowledge and confidence to participate in non-profit boards.

In this half-day workshop, you will learn how to engage as a volunteer in your community, which types of non-profit organizations work in British Columbia, different structures, types of non-profit leadership and decision making, and what it means to be a Board member.

Vantage Point offers this workshop for free to individuals in BC with no or limited (less than one year) experience in non-profit board governance, who are able to participate in English, and who identify as one or more of the following:

• Youth (aged 18-35)
• Indigenous
• Black
• Person of colour
• Person with disability
• 2SLGBTQIA+
• Newcomers to Canada

Learning Outcomes:

By the end of this workshop, you will be able to:

  1. Identify different types of non-profit organizations, non-profit leadership and decision making
  2. Assess your strengths, opportunities, and availability for various forms of volunteer work in non-profit organizations
  3. Examine expectations and risks associated with being a Board member
  4. Identify practical next steps to look for and select from available board opportunities

  2. Non-Profit Organizations in BC, including distinctions between Societies and Charities
  3. Board Roles and Responsibilities
  4. How to Use Your Voice on a Board

Suggested Participants:

This workshop is ideal for people who are new to the non-profit sector in British Columbia, want to develop a better understanding of its leadership and decision-making processes, and are looking for ways to engage in their communities and express their voices.
