Greenway Housing Co-operative recently completed a garden plot revitalization project with support from CHF BC and Coastal Community Credit Union’s Vancouver Island Community Impact Grant.
The co-op set out to turn an unused strip of grass and weeds into a viable garden plot. Greenway resident, Fern Hallam explained how eight co-op members were able to bring their own skillsets to the project, from wielding power tools to install the plots complete with 200 feet of drip irrigation, to committing time to dig out the old grass and shovel in new soil, to the gardening know-how needed to ensure effective stewardship of the new garden beds.
The original plan was to offer plots to members to grow their own food, with one reserved as a community garden where residents were encouraged to help themselves. However, with time left in the growing system rapidly ticking away, they opted to focus on a fulsome community plot, with the hope that once the area proves fruitful, more members will sign-up in coming years.
In addition to colourful rhododendrons, dahlias, and marigolds, they’ve planted a variety of herbs and vegetables, including broccoli, green beans, kale, chard, tomatoes, cucumbers, parsley, rosemary, and thyme.
“The garden enhancement at Greenway Co-op has made a meaningful difference in our community,” said Greenway resident, Kristen Stannix. “With many of our units lacking private outdoor space, the shared vegetable garden offers members, especially families and children, an accessible and inclusive way to grow their own food. It’s not just about fresh produce; it’s about connection, learning, and creating a sense of belonging.”
