Island Outreach: Connecting with Co-ops and Community

  11 June 2025

This past weekend, the CHF BC team travelled to Vancouver Island for an inspiring and jam-packed outreach tour filled with connection, learning, and celebration.

Friday: History, Housing, and Meaningful Conversations

We began the tour on Friday with a heartfelt visit to Washington Co-op, where we had the pleasure of sitting down with long-time member Sheila Mooney. Sheila shared stories about the co-op’s early days, the strong bonds among members, and how life in the co-op has shaped her experience over the years. Reflecting on her life in the community, she told us, “I just realized that this place is what has kept me focused, centered, interested. It’s made me, in a way, what I am now.” Her words were a moving reminder of the power of community and shared values in co-operative living.

The team also met with representatives from Associa BC and had a thoughtful exchange with members at Oak Bay Housing Co-op. Along with learning more about their co-op community, we shared updates on CHF BC’s new Centre for Co-operative Learning website—our new platform for accessible, online co-op education. The Oak Bay members offered helpful feedback and ideas for how the platform could support their ongoing learning journeys. As Glenda, an Oak Bay member who recently completed a course, put it: It really builds respect for what living in a co-op is all about!”

Saturday: Sustainability and Summer Fun

Saturday morning began with an educational tour of the Compost Education Centre. The visit sparked ideas about how co-ops can take active steps toward sustainability and reduce their environmental footprint.

In the afternoon, we gathered for the much-anticipated Annual Island BBQ! Co-op members from across the region came together to enjoy good food, good company, and a sunny day filled with laughter and connection. Events like these are a celebration of what co-ops are all about—community, cooperation, and care.

Sunday: A Look Inside Tyee Co-op

We wrapped up the tour on Sunday morning with a visit to Tyee Housing Co-op. We were welcomed to see the impressive renovations. It was inspiring to see the co-op’s dedication to maintaining and improving their homes, ensuring the space continues to meet members’ needs well into the future.

To all the Island members who hosted us, shared stories, asked questions, and spent time with us—thank you. Your openness, ideas, and commitment to co-operative living make our visits meaningful and energizing. We’re so grateful for your ongoing partnership and support.

We’ll see you again next year!
