Upcoming Energy Use Reporting Deadlines and Requirements

  16 March 2026

Is your co-op located in the City of Vancouver, City of Victoria, or District of Saanich? If so, and your co-op owns or operates a large multi-family building, you may have to report on annual energy use.

In the City of Vancouver, multi-family residential buildings of 50,000 square feet or larger will need to report their energy consumption. For more details and resources, visit the Energize Vancouver website.

On Vancouver Island, the Capital Regional District has launched its own benchmarking program. Starting this year, buildings over 30,000 square feet will need to report their energy use annually; next year, the requirement starts to apply to building over 10,000 square feet. Reporting in Victoria and Saanich will be mandatory, while large building owners and operators in other municipalities will see voluntary reporting. Learn more about the CRD Building Benchmarking Program.

The first step is to ensure you have energy benchmarking set up through ENERGY STAR Portfolio Manager. This makes reporting simpler in future years. It takes time to set up benchmarking and prepare for reporting, so it’s important to take action now!

Reporting deadlines for Vancouver, Victoria, and Saanich are all June 1, 2026. Remember that you will need to fulfil reporting requirements every year.
