Cannabis regulation and co-operative housing – Spring Education Conference, April 24, 2021

Workshop Intro:

1 to 3 p.m.

In October of 2018, cannabis was legalized in Canada for recreational and medical purposes.  Despite the significant impact that the legalization of cannabis can have on those in the cooperative housing community, there is still a general lack of understanding of the variety of laws that govern the use and growing of cannabis on private property in British Columbia.  This course will provide an overview of the legal regime in place in the province regarding cannabis, including an outline of the Human Rights Code and discussion on the evolving law regarding medical use.

By the end of this session, participants will be able to:

  • Describe the basic legal regime that governs the use and growing of cannabis on private property in British Columbia;
  • Understand the rights and obligations of those in the cooperative housing sector in regards to the use and growing of cannabis on private property in British Columbia;
  • Apply the laws to their daily practice as cooperative housing providers and managers.
