Washington Co-operative Housing Association

373 Burnside Rd East, Victoria, BC V9A 1A7

WCHA is a 59-unit equity housing co-op located in the Burnside Gorge neighbourhood of Victoria, BC. It comprises 38 adult-oriented one- and two-bedroom apartments, each with a balcony, and 21 two-, three- and four-bedroom townhouses for families and children, each with a small yard. The townhouses are allowed one pet per unit; no pets are allowed in the apartment building.

Membership in the Association requires purchasing shares in an amount commensurate with the size of the unit. The shares are used as a form of security deposit, redeemable at the time of departure, less any money then owing to the Co-op. No interest is paid on the money received for shares. On completion of share purchase, the member is considered to be a tenant/owner of the unit and lives alongside other members to form a community.

Governance is by a board of directors elected from the membership; day-to-day operations are carried out by a combination of employees, contractors and member volunteers.

WCHA does not receive a government subsidy; instead, it relies on member-paid housing charges (the equivalent of rent) to fund its operations.

WCHA is a member of the Co-operative Housing Federation of BC (CHF BC), a co-operative association made up of member housing co-ops and related organizations in British Columbia.
