Urgent Resolution: Expedite Co-operative Housing Development Program

At our 2023 AGM on November 19, delegates passed an emergency resolution.

The resolution urges the THAT CHFBC urge the federal government and the Minister of Housing, Infrastructure and Communities to launch the Co-op Housing Development Program without further delay.

Marpole Co-op Get-together builds new relationships and partnerships

CHF BC hosted the latest get-together in our neighbourhood event series on July 12, 2023, with a group of housing co-ops in the Marpole neighbourhood of Vancouver.

Members from several Marpole housing co-ops spent a beautiful summer evening touring neighbourhood co-ops. During the tour, they shared their co-op living experiences with one another.

Co-operation among Co-operatives: Energy Efficiency and More!

CHF BC and CHF Canada embrace the internationally recognized co-op principles: democratic member control, education and training, and autonomy are all vital, but Principle #6, co-operation among co-operatives, is one we like to highlight.

Recently, staff members from CHF BC’s Planning and Renewal team had a chance to meet with our counterparts at the national federation, including the Regional Energy Coach, when they were visiting Vancouver.

The have launched a brand new YES Scholarship Program. The YES believes that all youth should be able to follow their passions, and they are excited to bring this opportunity to their Alumni Participants.

2023 International Day of Cooperatives: Co-operatives for Sustainable Development

This year, co-op members in Canada will have two events to celebrate or acknowledge on July 1st. In addition to being Canada Day, this year it is also the 101st International Day of Cooperatives!

"#CoopsDay" is an annual opportunity for local, national, and worldwide governments, civil society organizations, and the general public to learn more about cooperatives.

CMHC Support for Deep Energy Retrofits

CMHC recently announced the  Canada Greener Affordable Housing program (CGAH). The program focuses on supporting deep energy retrofits for existing multi-unit residential buildings. The goal is to see buildings achieve near net zero emissions.

As with all CMHC programs, there are multiple eligibility criteria, but the most critical are the very ambitious targets for energy consumption reductions and emissions.

National Indigenous Peoples Day 2023

Canada’s National Indigenous Peoples Day is a significant occasion that recognizes and honors the unique heritage, cultural diversity, and contributions of Indigenous peoples. This day serves as an opportunity to deepen understanding, foster reconciliation, and promote the rights and well-being of Indigenous communities across the country.

Indigenous Peoples Day traces its roots back to the early 1980s when Indigenous organizations and leaders established National Indigenous Solidarity Day. They wanted to raise awareness about the history, culture, and struggles of Indigenous peoples.

CHF Canada Resolution – UN Sustainable Development Goals & Co-op 2030 Vision

The first resolution members will be voting on at the 2023 CHF Canada national business meeting promotes co-op action towards the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and the Co-op 2030 Vision.

As a co-op member, you have a say. Encourage your co-op delegate to review the 2023 Resolutions package on the CHF Canada Annual Meeting event site, and be ready to vote June 17.

RFP: National Education Sector Scan and Equity, Diversity, & Inclusion Roadmap

The National Education Committee released a Request for Proposals for a project on equity, diversity and inclusion (EDI).

This work has emerged as a priority. The goal is to support the co-op housing sector in implementing best EDI practices in co-op communities.

CMHC Launches Canada Greener Affordable Housing Program

On June 1, 2023, CMHC launched a new time-limited program to support deep energy retrofits (i.e. ≥70% reduction in energy consumption and ≥80% in greenhouse gas emissions).

The Canada Greener Affordable Housing program helps affordable housing providers—including housing co-operative— complete deep energy retrofits on existing multi-unit residential buildings.

Celebrate Asian Heritage Month in May

May is Asian Heritage Month in Canada. This month provides us with an opportunity to celebrate the contributions that Canadians of Asian decent have made—and continue to make—in Canada. It is also a reminder for all of us to come together to combat anti-Asian racism and discrimination in all its forms.

VIDEO: Grandview-Woodland Housing Co-operatives Gathering

On April 28, 2023, CHF BC resumed its program of neighbourhood events with a group of housing co-ops located in the Grandview-Woodland neighbourhood of Vancouver.

Members from a number of housing co-ops from the neighbourhood had the chance to meet and discuss issues of common interest and visit several of the neighbourhood non-profit housing co-ops.
