National Indigenous Peoples Day 2023

Canada’s National Indigenous Peoples Day is a significant occasion that recognizes and honors the unique heritage, cultural diversity, and contributions of Indigenous peoples. This day serves as an opportunity to deepen understanding, foster reconciliation, and promote the rights and well-being of Indigenous communities across the country.

Indigenous Peoples Day traces its roots back to the early 1980s when Indigenous organizations and leaders established National Indigenous Solidarity Day. They wanted to raise awareness about the history, culture, and struggles of Indigenous peoples.

RFP: National Education Sector Scan and Equity, Diversity, & Inclusion Roadmap

The National Education Committee released a Request for Proposals for a project on equity, diversity and inclusion (EDI).

This work has emerged as a priority. The goal is to support the co-op housing sector in implementing best EDI practices in co-op communities.

Celebrate Asian Heritage Month in May

May is Asian Heritage Month in Canada. This month provides us with an opportunity to celebrate the contributions that Canadians of Asian decent have made—and continue to make—in Canada. It is also a reminder for all of us to come together to combat anti-Asian racism and discrimination in all its forms.

VIDEO: Grandview-Woodland Housing Co-operatives Gathering

On April 28, 2023, CHF BC resumed its program of neighbourhood events with a group of housing co-ops located in the Grandview-Woodland neighbourhood of Vancouver.

Members from a number of housing co-ops from the neighbourhood had the chance to meet and discuss issues of common interest and visit several of the neighbourhood non-profit housing co-ops.

Sahara Shaik wins BC Achievement Foundation 2023 Community Award

CHF BC board member Sahara Shaik has received a prestigious Community Award from the BC Achievement Foundation.

The Community Award program honours excellence and inspiring achievement in community service and leadership. It celebrates British Columbians who go above and beyond in their dedication and service to others. The award recognizes individuals who devote their time and energy to making their communities more caring, dynamic, beautiful, resilient and inclusive.

New Member in the News: Atira Workers Housing Co-operative

Atira Women’s Resource Society is nonprofit organization based in Vancouver, B.C.. They have found a unique solution to address the affordable housing crisis and improve employee well-being by providing housing to its staff members. This move has sparked interest in the potential for co-operative housing initiatives among other nonprofit organizations.

How Housing Co-operatives Build Equitable and Diverse Communities

As part of the CHF BC Scholarship process, applicants are asked to write a short essay on a topic related to housing co-ops. The independent Scholarship Committee committee members are consistently impressed with the high quality of insight and writing skills of the applicants.

Last year was no different. They were so impressed in fact that we wanted to share some of their essays will a broader audience.

The YES Camp is looking for camp staff this summer!

The YES offers leadership and team building summer camp programs for youth in grades 8-12 at Cowichan Lake on Vancouver Island. Their staff team is made up of a group of change-making volunteers. It is incredibly important to continue to build their teams, and they are now accepting volunteer applications for our 2023 Summer.
